Save the Night ! Light Pollution & Dark Skies Awareness Banner Week 2024


Save the Night. Be the solution. Stop light pollution.

The Town of Vienna Virginia is setting aside a week to increase awareness and to educate the public about light pollution. 

You are invited to join us to learn more about this rapidly growing problem, including light trespass and learn what you can do at home to help solve it and more.  

Learn how to certify your home Dark Sky Friendly here . The same principles apply to businesses, certify your business dark sky friendly too.

Become a citizen scientist and help measure light pollution with the Globe at Night program and app

Check out the Dark Skies backpack from the Fairfax County library. Use the sky quality meter to measure the night sky.

Visit Observatory Park at Turner Farm in Great Falls, VA every Friday night, weather permitting, to learn about astronomy, look through telescopes and why it is important to protect and reclaim the dark skies.  Talk with members of the Analemma Society and NOVAC.

Learn about the programs and opportunities available at George Mason’s Observatory.

Support DarkSky NOVA and DarkSky International and join others in protecting our shared heritage of starry night skies.

Write a paper or design a research project about light pollution and its effects.  Send it to DarkSky NOVA. Write a poem, a story or create a work of art and share it with us.

Write a poem, story, or create artwork about any of the areas light pollution impacts or the night sky. Share your work with DarkSky NOVA. We will feature it on our website and social media.

Walk through your neighborhood and count the number of lights. Are they shielded and a warm or amber color?

Is the illumination contained within the property boundary? Are they useful and necessary?

Begin the conversation with your friends, neighbors and colleagues about how to solve light pollution in your community using the 5 Principles for Responsible Outdoor Light at Night

Let your elected officials know that you value protecting the night.

Artificial light at night impacts not only humans but also birds, insects, and plants. Connect with experts on 17 November 2024 Sunday to understand how light pollution affects ecosystems, from fireflies and nocturnal pollinators to our own circadian rhythms and sleep patterns.

Light pollution, the excessive or misdirected artificial light that brightens our night skies, is a growing environmental issue with serious consequences we can address. Explore the different types of light pollution—like skyglow, light trespass and glare—and how they affect our ability to see the stars and enjoy the night.
